Origins
Georgina Farrow and Clare Murphy met whilst studying music at the Birmingham Conservatoire. In their third year, both participated in the college's Music and Health specialism, which involved running workshops in a Paediatrics ward at Heartlands Hospital in Birmingham. As they progressed into their final year, the pair endeavoured to expand upon their new-found passion for community music by working together on their Major Projects. With the help of tutor Liz Johnson and music co-ordinator of HEFT (Heart of England Foundation Trust) Esther Jackson, they were able to organise and execute a series of interactive music workshops for patients in Heartlands and Good Hope Hospital Birmingham.
The aim of the collaborated project was to focus more on adult wards as there are limits to the provision of artistic activities for such patients. As a result, the pair completed music sessions in the following units:
Geriatrics
Respiratory
Paediatrics (including the A&E department at Heartlands)
Stroke
Their project was very popular with patients, families and staff, and the pair have continued their work within this field since the conclusion of the project in May 2012. This has taken the form of regular reminiscence workshops in the Community Unit of Good Hope Hospital for patients with dementia.
In June 2012, CIC MF Community Music was set up in order to provide a wider variety of services. The company is currently in the process of organising more workshops within hospital settings as well as care homes. Another aspect that MF Community Music is interested in is working with people with SEN or learning difficulties, either as part of a group or on an individual basis.
